Meet the Farmyard Friends cast of Charlotte’s Web performing at Boonah Cultural Centre
School holidays will be much more than fun and games, with Scenic Rim Regional Council’s packed program of free and low-cost activities for all ages.
Teens and tweens are invited to kickstart the school holidays on Friday 24 June and enjoy an afternoon of free family fun featuring an inflatable obstacle course and bouncy playground, activity booths and free sausage sizzle at three locations.
The inflatable fun will run simultaneously at Jubilee Park, Beaudesert, Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds and Coronation Park, Boonah from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen encouraged the community to jump into the family fun as Council’s school holiday program offered something for everyone and every budget.
“Now’s the time to get the kids off the couch, off their devices and out of the house to see all our region has to offer and expand their horizons with new experiences,” he said.
“A school holiday highlight, Scenic Rim Eat Local Week runs from Saturday 25 June to Sunday 3 July with the biggest-ever program of events including farm tours, food festivals, workshops and fun for the whole family from free events to lavish gourmet experiences and the Winter Harvest Festival on Saturday 2 July.”
Council’s cultural program is also packed with boredom-busting activities from family films to hands-on workshops.
The Kids’ Flicks program is back bigger and better than ever, screening at The Centre Beaudesert and Boonah Cultural Centre as well as the Zamia Theatre, Tamborine Mountain with all tickets to family-friendly movies just $5 including a drink and snack.
The winter Kids’ Flicks program from Monday 27 June to Friday 8 July includes Around the World in 80 Days (PG), Monster Family 2 (PG), Sing 2 (PG), The Addams Family 2 (PG) and Pinocchio: A True Story (PG).
Charlotte’s Web, the timeless tale of the friendship between a spider and a pig destined for greatness, will be brought to life on the stage in two performances of a fun family concert at Boonah Cultural Centre on Wednesday 6 July. Tickets are from $12.50 for children and concession card holders.
Children aged over seven can meet the Charlotte’s Web cast and join in a stage workshop, with a focus on drama and dance activities, for just $12 at Boonah Cultural Centre on Tuesday 5 July from 11am to 12pm.
Council’s free Life in Focus exhibition at The Centre Beaudesert continues during the school holidays and is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
The exhibition has inspired a number of low-cost school holiday activities at Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain – the My Plant World Stop-Motion Animation Workshop with Kerbside Collective and Plants Under the Microscope with Danni Zuvela for just $12 a session.
In My Plant World, on Tuesday 28 June and Wednesday 29 June, children will create their own nature-inspired mandala masterpiece using items found in nature and transform this into a moving landscape using stop-motion animation.
Plants Under the Microscope, on Thursday 7 July and Friday 8 July, will explore the microscopic world of plants as children create their own detailed artworks of leaf designs and patterns and see how corals glow under black light.
Children aged eight to 16 years can learn how to host their own podcast in a workshop with the Goat Track Theatre team. The Podcasting Creativity Lab on Thursday 30 June runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm at The Centre Beaudesert and, at just $25, places will fill quickly so bookings are essential.
Scenic Rim libraries will also be hubs of activity during the school holidays with a range of free activities.
Crafty kids can get growing with free Cress Heads classes at Beaudesert Library on Thursday 30 June, Boonah Library on Wednesday 29 June, Canungra Library on Thursday 30 June and Tamborine Mountain Library on Wednesday 29 June.
